4 C’s To Help Work Through Difficult Situations

Everyone’s reality has been upended due to coronavirus. To help you achieve as much normalcy as possible, here are some recommendations for parents to help get you through!

CONTROL

Look at your day. What do you have control over?

  • Structure of the day
  • Mindset
  • Reaching out to others for help
  • Exercise

What don’t you have control over?

  • Schools re-opening
  • Food on shelves at supermarket
  • Weather

COMMITMENT

We’re used to a specific definition of normal. Get up, get ready, get kids ready, drop off at school, then we’re off into work mode (either outside or inside the home). Now commitments have blended. What are you committed to now? Decide to be the parent that turns this circumstance into an opportunity to learn important life skills, such as:

  • Being flexible
  • Adapting to change
  • More independent behavior for kids
  • Being organized and self-initiating tasks
  • Enforcing age-appropriate household chores for all family members
  • Cultivating resilience

CHALLENGE

Look at the COVID-19 pandemic as a challenge instead of a problem. Problem sounds insurmountable. Framing it as a challenge has an implied meaning that we can do something to work through it. That it’s a temporary or time-limited thing, even if we don’t know the exact amount of time.

CONNECTION

Social distance doesn’t mean social isolation. Reach out to friends and family to connect via video chat. Help your child with virtual playdates. Explore apps that are helping kids stay connected such as Marco Polo and FB for kids.
